Residency Didactics

The resident didactic and seminar schedule is designed to complement and expand on the knowledge gained during the MSCI coursework, to assure all relevant subjects are addressed and to prepare residents for the independent practice of public health and general preventive medicine. The seminar will include the following activities.

• Weekly – Faculty and resident-led lectures and/or case studies
• Monthly – Clinical guideline presentations and/or journal club
• Bi-monthly – School of Population Health Grand Rounds
• Quarterly – Ethics and professionalism case studies
• Annually – USPSTF Critical Review (PGY-3 residents only)

Topics for discussion during the weekly lectures include:

• Coalition skill building
• Communication skills
• Chronic diseases of public health significance
• Environmental health
• Epidemiology and surveillance
• Health systems management and administration
• Infectious diseases of public health significance
• Injury prevention
• Public health preparedness (emergency preparedness)
• Public health overview
• Quality improvement skills 

Participation in Population Health Grand Rounds is also required of all residents. Residents are encouraged to participate in other grand rounds and lectures offered at the UMMC such as family medicine grand rounds.
